As most of you know, Jarrett and I would 1.) Love to have so many dogs that we don't know what to do with 2.) Foster dogs, but we both know we'd get too attached and don't have the room in our home/back yard to do it.
I had heard about volunteering to do dog transports on the knot. I know I'm still addicted to that website, but it's a good thing. Basically, these transports take place on weekends and come from all over the country. We had to pick up the dogs on the south side of Indy and take them to Layafette, IN. About an hour drive from the pickup location. Basically, the dogs are coming from KILL shelters going to 1. a rescue or 2. their forever home.
We ended up with 2 dogs, a lab mix named Savana and a Boxer (I don't know what her name was). The lab mix was going to her forever home in Illinois and the Boxer was going to a rescue in Wisconsin. Mind you both of these dogs came from GEORGIA! The transport started Saturday morning at 7am and we picked the dogs up at 7pm on Saturday night and I believe they were to arrive at their destinations between 9-11pm. Long day for the dogs, but a great thing!!
They both did great in the car, we put one in the way back of the equinox and the other in the back seat. We didn't hear a peep out of either of them the whole trip. The gal that left them with us and the gal that we dropped them off with both had kennels, but we don't have them so we were hoping for the best and it was NO problem at all.
The boxer definitely needed some training. We had to wait for the pickup of the next leg at cracker barrel and the gal was running way late so we had about an hour and a half wait and the dog didn't sit down once, she was good, just anxious or something. The lab on the other hand was so sweet, she just tried to sit in your lap.
I think Jarrett would agree that we'd do it again if we have some free time. It's such a good thing. If anyone is interested in doing this, please let me know and I'll get you added to the email list. There were actually 5 dogs that started out in GA, the other three broke off and headed up the east coast and ended up some where in NY so they go all over the US. Basically, an email is sent out and if you want to help, you respond to the email and if you're busy, you just ignore it! It's very easy!!
Anyway, the below email is from the woman who received Savana the lab that we had. I was sad to see her go, which is exactly why we couldn't foster, I got attached after about 4 hours, but the email below confirms why we did the transport!!!
Love from Indy
